33 Industrial development As the USA expanded westwards to the Pacific the country changed economically and socially. From a once rural society of farms and small towns emerged an industrial giant of huge cities. Factories that both provided the rails and barbed wire for the western farmlands and required the increasing bounty of foodstuffs and raw materials needed more labour than the USA could provide. People poured in from all over Europe. Where once they had originally come mainly from Britain and similar northern European societies they now also flooded in first from Ireland, then from Italy, Poland and Russia, Jews and gentiles alike.

This means that in towns with an over-abundance of motel construction, chains may reduce their prices below that charged elsewhere. Check their prices on the huge bill boards visible from the main roads, phone, or just drop in and ask. Also, much of this new construction has been to catch trade passing along the new roads, freeways and bypasses. The older motels on the older, now bypassed, roads are often far cheaper and may well have bargains, like special mid-week prices. These can be a considerable saving (if you can avoid thinking of Psycho).

Food is priced at familiar European levels, with steak generally cheaper, but with lamb more expensive (and usually frozen from New Zealand). A cup of coffee can easily cost a pound or two. Prices in diners and coffee-shops (especially in drug stores) can be very reasonable, often with free coffee refills (if you like it weak).
